Tapestry Kits

There are many different types of textile art. Tapestry is but one of them.

Tapestry, however, should never be considered just one of those textile crafts that people are looking into. If it is not the most popular, it is definitely the most notable. That’s because tapestry is very intricate. It will give you quite a hard time to learn but once you are able to get through one complicated project, you can call yourself an arts and crafts master.

What is Tapestry?

As mentioned earlier, tapestry is a form of complex textile art. The threads in this case are woven in two sets – an interlaced thread running parallel to the length and an interlaced thread running parallel to the width. As opposed to other weaving methods, tapestry is basically a weft-faced woven art. The interlaced threads running parallel to the length or the warp threads are usually kept hidden in the final artwork. In regular cloth weaving, both the weft and warp threads are made visible.

Tapestry uses many different types of threads. The common choices are wool and cotton but others may also choose to use silk, silver, or gold threads. As there is a specific pattern being hit on, the yarns used in tapestry are discontinuous. The different colors of threads are worked through the pattern area to build the design.

Needlepoint and Tapestry

Needlepoint is an entirely different textile art but it is often referred to tapestry. The two have some similar points but are very different in techniques. Their outputs almost look the same if you look at a distance. In needlepoint, however, the embroidery is stitched through the canvass while in tapestry; it is woven through the canvass. That should tell you how much work and attention is needed for you to complete a tapestry project.
